The Thallium Clad Element Coin

Back to Coin Page

The Thallium coin we are offering as part of our regular-issue series is a clad version encased in clear resin. The coin itself consists of a very thin layer (foil) of pure Thallium metal clad to a lead blank which is then struck with the normal appearance of our other Element Series coins. The obverse, or side that shows the Tl symbol, is the Thallium layer while the rest of the coin is made of lead. Thallium is one of the most toxic elements in the Periodic Table. For this reason it was decided to offer a coin that will show the metal itself, but minimize the amount of toxic metal in the coin. The weight of the thallium in the coin will be about 0.2 grams, with the balance of the weight of the coin being lead. You will notice the color difference with the thallium (silvery, dull color) with the lead side (shinier, darker and metallic).

The coin is encsed in resin for two reasons. One is to prevent you from touching the toxic metal (thallium) and the other is to prevent the thallium from corroding. When directly exposed to air, thallium will react with oxygen to produce a black powder. The clear resin protects the thallium from exposure and corrosion.
