The Elements Coin Series

Last Updated July 7, 2023

Welcome to the Elements Coin Series page. In 2006 we embarked on an ambitious project to produce standard-size coins made from as many different metals and elements from the Periodic Table of the elements as we could. So far we have been able to offer many different metals/elements in coin form and are continually marching through the periodic table with the ultimate goal of making these coins out of every element possible.

These coins are beautifully made as you will see by viewing the high-resolution photos below. Most of the coins have a nice cartwheel luster, just like newly minted coins that show the luster line as it is twirled around under bright light.

Some of the elements we have used for coins are, to our knowledge, the FIRST EVER coins or medals struck with that particular metal/element! (Gadolinium, Indium, Rhodium and Ytterbium are examples)

Almost all of the metals and elements we use in these coins are at least 99% pure with many being 99.9% pure and higher. The thickness of all the coins is the same, except for some of the precious metals which have varieties that are thinner to keep the weight at exactly 1/10 troy ounce (3.1 grams).

These coins are very close to the diameter of a United States 1-cent coin (penny) with actual dimensions 3/4 inch diameter (19mm). These coins are made from punched blanks that are then struck on a coin press to create the images on the coin.

On the obverse, or front side of the coin, is the element name, Periodic Table symbol, atomic number & weight, melting point and density values. On the reverse, or back side, is a graphic representing the Periodic Table of the Elements which will be standard on all coins to be made in this series.

We also offer various supplies such as coin albums, flips and airtites for the convenience of collectors. Those are listed for sale below along with the coins.

For new varieties of some of these coins, including glass-sealed and resin-sealed varieties, see the Varieties section below.

Latest Developments:

Tellurium is now available as a pure, stand-alone coin. Replaces the previous variety that is mixed with binder and resin-cast. The coin weighs 2.7 grams. The coin is made of pure Tellurium, it is pressed from tellurium powder using pressure and heat. A nice improvement over the current resin-cast coin. Comes in an air-tite and coin flip. Here is a photo:

With the success of Rhenium, testing will now be directed towards three new possible coins: Manganese, Tungsten and Osmium. Recent valuable experience in making the latest new issues of coins will be applied to the development of these new coins.

Here's what is going on with the next elements to be coined:

Rhodium: Rhodium is now offered in the 1/10 troy ounce format and is included as part of the standard set. The 5.3 gram Rhodium coin is now grouped with the "standard-thickness" precious metal coins as a variety.

Manganese and Osmium: Testing is ongoing with Manganese - we are trying different additive materials hoping to find something that will help bind manganese metal together to make a coin out of it. After that we will try a similar process with Osmium.

Tungsten: A new screen-printing process is being evaluated to make Tungsten coins out of 90-95% pure tungsten metal. A laser-etching process was explored earlier but so far has not panned out. Also the same process used for Iridium, Ruthenium and Rhenium coins (coining from metal powder) looks promising for Tungsten, as long as it is alloyed with 5-10% other metals. This will be evaluated while testing is done for osmium and other metals. We have been told it can be done so stay tuned. Many customers have been asking for this one!

Existing coins with new Encapsulations: Most recently we were able to seal Terbium, Dysprosium and Terbium coins in glass capsules and are continuing to find ways to seal as many of our coins in glass or resin as possible.

Gases: These will eventually be offered sealed in glass capsules with the coin pattern marked on them. An etching process for glass has been tested with mixed results so far but more testing will be done. Alternate processes for marking the coin pattern in a gas-filled glass capsule will be tested also.

Alkali Metals: Lithium would be first in this series. Special equipment will be needed to make these as oxide-free as possible. The format most likely would be a glass capsule encased in a clear resin block.

Boron and Carbon: Currently offered as pressed powders in resin castings, alternate processes will be evaluated to make these coins as standalone (no resin). Hot-pressing is one process that will be evaluated.

The Rest: These are Silicon, Arsenic, Germanium and Iodine. We have done some early evaluations and crude attempts at striking these materials with mixed success. Some of these will be the last elements to be done in coin form. Rest assured though, we never give up!

Let us know what you think about these, or any other ideas you may have!

Regular-Issue Element Series Coins:

Most of these coins are in stock and available for purchase now. They will be packaged in a protective 2-inch x 2-inch clear plastic flexible coin flip with an informational card inserted in the flip. The flip is made of PVC-free plastic that will protect the coin and not corrode it. Some coins will be also packaged inside an "airtite" plastic holder to offer further protection. A few of the other coins will be sealed in glass capsules, and some others encased in clear plastic resin. Gadolinium Troy-Ounce Round: Send us an email if you'd like to reserve one - price is $70 each, limit one per customer for now. The first strike of these occurred August 12, 2011. To our knowledge, this is the first troy-ounce piece ever made from a rare-earth metal. The diameter is 1.5 inches (38mm), about the same as a U.S. silver dollar. The plan is to eventually offer a complete set of the rare-earth metals in troy-ounce round format, and the other elements too (troy-ounce blanks have been made so far for indium, bismuth, ytterbium, selenium and a few others).

These are "pattern" pieces" - the final, permanent design will hopefully include graphic 3-D figures. Any ideas? We are wide open for design ideas for the troy-ounce series at this stage in development. Let us know your comments.
