New Releases:
Rhodium
Phosphorus
Barium
Sulfur Encased in Resin
Anodized Varieties of: Zirconium, Hafnium, Titanium and Tantalum
Palladium, Gold, Platinum in Standard Thickness varieties

Welcome to our Elements Coin Series page. In 2006 we embarked on an ambitious project to produce standard-size coins made from as many different metals and elements from the Periodic Table of the elements as we could. So far we have been able to offer many different metals/elements in coin form and are continually marching through the periodic table with the ultimate goal of making these coins out of every element possible.

We have partnered with Penny Press Mint (see website), a small minting operation that strikes most of these fantastic coins for us from the various metals that we provide. These coins are beautifully made as you will see by viewing the high-resolution photos below. The raised lettering and graphics have a frosted appearance which is a nice contrast with the shiny background. Most of the coins have a nice cartwheel luster, just like newly minted coins that show the luster line as it is twirled around under bright light.

Some of the elements we have used for coins are, to our knowledge, the FIRST EVER coins or medals struck with that particular metal/element! (Gadolinium, Indium and Ytterbium are examples)

Almost all of the metals and elements we use in these coins are at least 99% pure with many being 99.9% pure and higher. The thickness of all the coins is the same, except for the precious metals - gold, palladium and platinum. Those are thinner to keep the weight at exactly 1/10 troy ounce (3.1 grams). We do offer as varieties these metals in the standard thickness as the other coins in the set.

These coins are very close to the diameter of a United States 1-cent coin (penny) with actual dimensions 3/4 inch diameter (19mm). These coins are made from punched blanks that are then struck on a coin press to create the images on the coin.

On the obverse, or front side of the coin, is the element name, Periodic Table symbol, atomic number & weight, melting point and density values. On the reverse, or back side, is a graphic representing the Periodic Table of the Elements which will be standard on all coins to be made in this series.

We also offer various supplies such as coin albums, flips and airtites for the convenience of collectors. Those are listed for sale below along with the coins.

Latest Developments:

We are now up to 50 different elements offered in coin form with three new releases in May. New releases since the last update are: Rhodium, Phosphorus and Barium. Thanks everyone for your patience with the long period of time between releases. These materials ended up being very difficult to work with and caused several problems during testing.

Here are photos of the first coins that were made of each of these elements:

Rhodium

Phosphorus (White)

Barium

These can be purchased now on a reservation basis - it will be about 3-4 weeks before we have these in sufficient supply to offer on a regular basis. The barium coins in particular will look better than the one in the photo above as the process to make them is perfected. The phosphorus coins are offered in white or red form, the white form is pictured above. The red form will be considered part of the standard set, the white form a variety.

Barium Price: $62.00
Phosphorus (White) Price: $65.00
Phosphorus (Red) Price: $55.00
Rhodium Price: $430.00

The Sulfur coins encapsulated in resin are offered in the Varieties section near the bottom of this page.

Here's what is going on with the next elements to be coined:

Strontium: This metal is similar to Barium, and with the success of making Barium coins, strontium should be successful as well. This will lead to the alkali metals starting with lithium.

Rhenium: Rhenium may be possible now that Rhodium has been done. Rhenium is even harder than rhodium making it an additional challenge. Iridium may also be possible once we develop and refine the process for these metals.

Gases and liquids: We are looking for the best way to etch the Elements Series patterns on glass. Then we will offer these elements sealed in the same glass capsules as some of the reactive metals (like Lanthanum).

Tungsten, Ruthenium and Osmium: These most likely cannot be struck by conventional means so we have been looking into alternate processes to produce the coin images on these metals.

The Rest: These are Manganese, Boron, Silicon, Arsenic, Germanium, Tellurium and Iodine. We have done some early evaluations and crude attempts at striking these materials with mixed success. Some of these will be the last elements to be done in coin form. Rest assured though, we never give up!

Alloys: We've picked four alloys to start the alloy-series set of coins. These should be available within the next two months. The dies and materials have been ordered. The first alloys we will be offering are: Wood's metal, Bronze, Brass and Nickel-silver.

Within the coming months we are considering or testing other varieties of this coin series, such as:

- Making larger-diameter coins
- Striking coins from metal filings and powders

We can also make customized dies that would allow us to produce an entire collection of our coins with a personalized reverse side. The personalized side can contain any wording you would like, such as your name, company name, unique patterns, etc. If interested, let us know your details and we can provide a quote.

Let us know what you think about these, or any other ideas you may have!
